Underquilt Care and Use Instructions
How to Use Your New Underquilt:
Remove all bedding from the bed and place your underquilt directly onto the mattress. It may look somewhat thick and undersized, but it will soon settle down to its normal loft of somewhere between 2 and 3 inches.
Next, we recommend placing a lightweight, washable cotton flannelette directly on top of the underquilt for soiling protection. Do not use mattress covers made with foam or other synthetic fibers, as this will oppose the natural cushioning and air movement breathability of the wool.
Place your bottom sheet on next, and proceed with sheet and blanket layers
as normal.
To promote even settling of your underquilt, try to lie over as wide an area
as possible during the first few weeks of use. It's also good practice to turn
the underquilt over and/or from end-to-end each time you change your sheets.
A Cuddler underquilt provides you with natural insulation. If your bed is cold when you first enter it, notice how quickly it warms up with our underquilt beneath you. The wool retains that warmth and envelopes you in comfort throughout the night. In the summer, air circulating through the wool provides a breathable cushion that keeps you from becoming "sticky" on hot nights. Some adjustment of bedclothes may be in order--most likely you'll need fewer of them--so experiment until you find the clothes and bed cover combination most comfortable.
Underquilt Size:
Position your new Cuddle Ewe Underquilt in the center of your mattress.
All
sizes of Cuddle Ewe underquilts are manufactured so that their relaxed state
dimensions are within one (1) inch (on all sides) of the mattress surface,
which they were designed to cover (please see illustration "A").
This is done to facilitate the covering of your new underquilt and your mattress
with a normal sized bottom sheet.
It has been our experience in the past that underquilts sized to within one (1) inch of the mattress surface, on all sides, as opposed to the exact size of the mattress surface, fit best when covered with a standard-sized bottom sheet.
For instance, we label our queen-sized underquilts as 60" x 80", which is the conventional--or standard size--for a queen mattress and box spring set. But, our underquilts actually measure 58" x 78" (on average) in a relaxed state.
This marked dimension's actual variance is not unlike the way a 2" x 4" piece of lumber varies from its actual size of 1.5" x 3.5". The size becomes part of the product description, mainly for identification purposes, rather than an indicator of its actual size.
Normal Thickness Loss:
It's normal for a Cuddle Ewe underquilt to lose some of its thickness over time, and we want you to know that this thickness loss is predictable. Furthermore, it can be demonstrated by an industry standard bedding product life test.
The Cuddle Ewe company has retained the testing and engineering consulting services of Maxim Technologies, Inc. In fact, their St. Paul facility conducted the "Octogonal Roller" tests which generated the data for the illustrations below.
Maxim is ranked among the top 50 largest engineering firms in the U.S. and the "Octogonal Roller" test is recognized as an industry standard for measuring product life by the American Hotel and Motel Association (AH & MA).
Caring for Your Underquilt:
You may wish to remove the underquilt from your mattress occasionally to vacuum clean it, then hang it outdoors naturally. Loops sewn into the ticking are provided for this purpose.
Do not machine wash or dry clean this product, as that can deteriorate the resiliency and loft of the specially processed wool inside your underquilt. Should it become soiled, gently sponge the underquilt with a damp cloth and mild detergent, then allow to air dry.
