Avocado Oil from New Zealand
YourNatureStore.com calls this the tastiest health find of the year!
Never heard of it? You soon will. This tasty oil has already taken its home market, New Zealand, by storm and now it has landed here in the United States.
The new oil is getting rave reviews among the chefs and food lovers who have already tasted it and even that pukka English celebrity chef Jamie Oliver - aka The Naked Chef - has tipped avocado Oil as the next “it” ingredient.
The makers, Olivado New Zealand, say their avocado Oil has no cholesterol or salt and, like Olive Oil, can help the body control and lower its cholesterol levels. avocado Oil is a rich source of monounsaturated fat, acknowledged by experts as the “good” fat because it helps lower “bad” LDL cholesterol and may increase “good” HDL cholesterol.
Additionally, Avocado Oil contains high levels of a natural plant compound called Beta Sitosterol, which is known to inhibit the absorption of cholesterol into the bloodstream – the Avocado Oil produced by Olivado has up to four times the Beta Sitosterol level of Olive Oil. Recent British medical studies also found that Beta Sitosterol provided relief to men suffering with prostate problems.
And Avocado Oil is a rich source of Vitamin E, which is good for the skin.
All excellent reasons for using Avocado Oil with food, says Chris Nathan, a former chef and now Managing Director of Olivado New Zealand Ltd, recently in the US to promote his new product. But the best reasons to use it, adds Mr Nathan, are the taste and flavour of Olivado Avocado Oil.
Olivado Avocado Oil
As part of the Technology New Zealand research project undertaken by Massey University, administered by Prof Laurence Eyres, head of Food Science, on ways to improve the quality of Olivado Avocado Oil, periodic tests were carried out on various batches between January 2001 and May 2001. The average specification of Olivado Avocado Oil taken during that period met the following target parameters:
- Acid Value (AOCS Cd 3a-63) < 0.4
- Free Fatty Acid (% of oleic) < 0.2%
- Peroxide Value (AOCS Cd 8b-90) < 1.0
- Moisture Content (AOCS Ca 2e-84) < 0.1%
- Accelerated oxidation time > 12 hrs (< 100 MEQ/Kg)
- Iodine Value (AOCS Cd lb-87) 80 to 95
- Saponification Value (AOCS Cd 3-25) 177 to 198
- Unsaponifiable Matter 1%
- Phytosterols (Beta Sitosterol) Approx. 1%
- Monounsaturated Fatty Acid Content Approx. 80%
- Sensory flavour score - Characteristic and nutty, free from painty, beany, rancid or metallic flavour notes
From these results, cold pressed Olivado Avocado Oil would qualify as a premium Extra Virgin oil under the guidelines for the classification of Extra Virgin Olive Oils, set down by the International Olive Oil Council (IOOC). These results put Olivado Avocado Oil in the top 5% worldwide of food oils for quality and taste values.
Through the Technology New Zealand Research project, Olivado NZ believes it can make even further improvements on these quality specifications.
