Recipe for the pHBB Lemonade: 1/2 cup of fresh lemon juice (3-4 lemons/limes, a heaping 1/2 tsp cocentrated stevia, plus one gallon pure water, stir with a wire whip to melt stevia, and serve! Fresh mint leaves in the glass add a little zing. We use CitriStar Juicer to quickly juice our lemons - see left side panel.

Simmer 3 herbal berry tea bags in 1 1/2 quarts of water for about 15 min., turn off heat add heaping 1/4tsp of stevia concentrate, pour over 1/2 gallon container filled with ice - you now have a sweet kid beverage. (I sometimes add 2 oz concentrated juice to this recipe, i.e., black cherry, blueberry, etc., which makes great ice pops! Maraline)

What is Stevia?
The family of extracts of the Stevia plant which are taken from the leaves of the Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni plant. The extracts are known as Steviosides and Rebaudiosides depending on which part of the plant is isolated. These extracts are approximately 300 times sweeter than sugar unless diluted. In 1970 the Japanese began extracting the pure sweet powder found in the leaf for testing and commercial use. Stevia sweeteners have been fully approved and widely used in Japan since 1970 in food products and soft drinks and for table-top use. It is also fully approved and in use in Brazil, where it is also recommended for diabetics.
As a result of the Health Freedom Act passed in September 1995 by Congress, Stevia leaves and the extract of Stevia leaves (Steviosides & Rebauiosides), are allowable for import and commerce in the United States of America, if they are explicitly labeled as a DIETARY SUPPLEMENT, or for use as a dietary ingredient of a dietary supplement. The FDA still has not approved this product for use as a food additive due to lack of costly testing in the United States and suspected lobbying pressure by chemical companies producing synthetic sugar substitutes.

The stevia plant mainly contains these four steviol glycosides: stevioside, rebaudioside A, rebaudioside C and dulcoside A. Most stevia extracts are primarily made from stevioside because it is the most plentiful and therefore cheaper but it has the bitter aftertaste. The Rebaudioside-A is the sweetest and best tasting but less plentiful so it's more expensive. But it's well worth the extra cost when you only need a couple of drops per serving.
