Terms used and what you should look for in a water system:
Flow rate – GPM means measured in gallons per minute. The GPM or flow rate determines the amount of water available to run your shower, toilet, hot water heater, dishwasher, etc. Look at the demand ratings printed on your appliances and toilet especially if they are unusual, to calculate what you need. Typically they are as follows: showerheads flow 2.5 to 5 gpm, toilet 5 gpm, dishwasher 3 gpm. Your water flow rate requirements may range from 15 - 40 gpm depending on your daily usage requirements. A whole house filter system with a flow rate less than 10gpm is unacceptable for maintaining uninterrupted, comfortable water pressure during peak use.
Filter size – Size determines "capacity, meaning how many gallons pass through the system". Therefore, the larger the filter the more time inbetween filter changes, and the more water it will flow and with greater pressure. However port size (port is your pipe size) has a greater impact on GPM and pressure.
The ideal filter size for most homes is is either an 18-24 month average 80k gallon capacity, or 4.5” x 10" or 3-4 year average 160 gallon capacity which is 4.5 x 20”.
Filter life – Pre or sediment (filter), purification (filter), and micron size (filter).
- Sediment 5 micron pre- filter life will vary depending on the sediment quantity and quality.
- kdf and gac (granulated active carbon) according to capacity, may also be called KDF 55 & 85 or Eagle Redox 55 & 85
- post 5 micron wrapped in 1 micron and then sediment filter according to capacity
- CAPACITY - 80k is usually 18-24mos
160k is usually 36-48 mos
Back Flush Systems -- Why? What to look for:
Now offered is a whole house system where the purifying media is placed in a filter/cannister, and you simply exchange the filters periodically. To do so, unscrew the housing with provided tool, remove used filter and install new filter. Today the contained systems are very effective and much less expensive to purchase. In addition, installation expense is dramatically reduced when you do not need to and so much easier to maintain that most people are opting for
Back Flush Option - You can install a whole house system that allows you to use raw media (provided in bag lots with pouring instructions), and your system can be manually or electronically backwashed. This extends the life of the purification media only, however, you would need a drain nearby for this to be an effective choice, otherwise you would need further plumbing activity at time of installation.
Port size – the ideal port size on a whole house water filter is 1”. Even if the home uses ¾” piping, using a 1” ported system will not create any bottlenecks when fitted onto the ¾” pipe. Whole house water filter systems with 1” ports and 4.5” x 20” filter carry more than enough water so that pressure drops are virtually non-existent.

If you currently have a whole house water system that accomodates (by size) filters of 4 5/8" x 20", 4 1/2" x 20" and generically referred to as 5" x 20" cartridges, then you may want to check out our NSF approved, with lab tests, redox multi stage, carbon block, and/or sediment.
Water systems that provide for water filter cartridges are called contained systems. They are typically installed inline (meaning on existing water line), the water flows through your water line into the system: one port in, one port out, contained water system, which means the filters are replaceable, and when it was installed, the water line was simply cut and the system was inserted (somewhere between point of entry and your hot water heater)-
It makes it easier to change fitlers if you add/have a on/off handle on either side so you can turn water off, place a bucket beneath the system, use the handle wrench that comes with the system, or order another here, change filters and you are all set.
